HOW TO GET AN A

COLLEGE

101

NERDING OUT WHILE WORKING OUT

Academics are just as important as winning that game you have been training for. The best way to look at this idea is that anything can happen to you resulting in losing your athletic abilities, but nothing can take your education away. With that said, why not have the best of both worlds? Nerd out while you work out!

It is a requirement of most colleges to maintain a minimum GPA to continue participating in college athletics. Sometimes, it may seem impossible to fit studying into a busy athletic schedule but a few tips and tricks can make it easier to score that extra point on the field and in the classroom.

Pencil and notepad
  • Take good notes

    • All good study habits start with good notes to go off of. Part of studying is going to class, paying attention and taking good notes that you can refer back to later on. You tend to retain more when you write notes rather than typing them, so put the distracting computer away and bring out the pen and paper.

  • Space out your studying

    • Don't cram last minute, pull all nighters, or load up on caffeine before exams. Those have all been shown to be highly unsuccessful. Instead, students should space out their studying a week or two leading up to the exam day. By doing so, the students will retain the knowledge better and remember more information in the long run.

  • Study buddies and study groups!

    • When working with a study buddy or a small study group of 3-4 people, different ideas and viewpoints are thrown into the mix. One person may have the answer to a question you had and vise versa so utilize your classmates!

  • Start with the most difficult subject first
    • Difficult subjects require the most mental energy and effort, so you should start with those topics first. This improves the overall effectiveness of your study session which in turn improves your academic success.

  • Put your distractions away

    • If you are distracted while studying, it will lead to losing focus and you won’t retain any new information. We have all fell into the never ending video loop when you start by watching one academic video and two hours later you are watching funny dog fail videos.. Don’t let that happen to you, put the distractions away.
